I cannot remember everything.
I must have been unconscious most of the time.
I remember only the grandiose moment
when they all started to sing, as if prearranged,
the old prayer they had neglected for so many years
the forgotten creed!
But I have no recollection how I got underground
to live in the sewers of Warsaw for so long a time.
Non posso ricordare ogni cosa
Devo essere rimasto privo di conoscenza il più del tempo.
Ricordo soltanto il grandioso momento
quando tutti cominciarono a cantare,
come si fossero messi d’accordo prima,
l’antica preghiera trascurata per così tanti anni
il credo dimenticato!
Ma non ho memoria di come riuscii sotto terra
a vivere nelle fogne di Varsavia, per un tempo così lungo.
