[Abbiamo intervistato Hamid Mir, capo redattore della GEO Television a Islamabad, biografo ufficiale di Osama bin Laden e ultimo giornalista ad averlo intervistato. Mir svela i retroscena del rapimento Sgrena e la rottura interna che sta avvenendo nella guerriglia irachena.]

Secondo il tuo parere perché è stata rapita Giuliana Sgrena?

“Giuliana Sgrena è stata rapita a causa della presenza di truppe italiane in Iraq. Sta pagando il prezzo della politica del governo italiano. Io penso che i rapitori siano ribelli Sunniti, e sono certi che lei non sia una spia e che è contro la guerra in Iraq. Il governo italiano non ha fatto niente di serio fino ad ora per il rilascio di Giuliana. E’ stata rapita perchè stava lavorando in maniera molto diversa dagli altri giornalisti occidentali. I grandi corrispondenti dei giornali americani e inglesi fanno “giornalismo da hotel” mentre la coraggiosa corrispondente italiana stava seguendo le sue storie con le sue gambe sulla strada, e questa sua attitudine è stata la causa del rapimento. Non ci sono dubbi che molti agenti dei servizi americani e inglesi usino tesserini da giornalisti a Baghdad. Questo comportamento è una minaccia per tutti i giornalisti”.

I rapitori di Giuliana Sgrena sono gli stessi di Flaurence Aubenas di “Liberation”?

“Non posso dire che il gruppo sia lo stesso, non ho elementi, ma posso dire attraverso la mia esperienza che la maggioranza degli iracheni odia tutte le nazioni coinvolte in questa guerra. Ho notato questo atteggiamento da parte degli iracheni dopo l’invasione del 2003. Sono musulmano ma non ho avuto rapporti facili con la popolazione, perché provengo dal Pakistan, una nazione alleata degli Stati Uniti nella guerra al terrore. Quando sono ritornato di nuovo in Iraq nel 2004, l’atteggiamento degli iracheni era cambiato, perché il Pakistan aveva rifiutato l’invio di truppe in Iraq. Ci sono diversi gruppi nelle aree sunnite ma i loro obiettivi sono gli stessi: vogliono che gli americani se ne vadano via. Se gli americani invadono l’Italia oggi, che cosa fareste? Sono sicuro che gli italiani reagirebbero alla stessa maniera in cui gli iracheni stanno reagendo contro gli Stati Uniti e i suoi alleati”.

Dietro la strategia dei rapimenti c’è la mano di Al Qaeda?

”Questa è una domanda molto importante. La prima cosa che devi comprendere è che Al Qaeda non è più un’organizzazione ormai, ma è diventata un’ideologia. Molti gruppi in Iraq stanno usando il nome di Al Qaeda come se fosse un franchising. Posso dirti, assumendomene la piena responsabilità, che Osama bin Laden è contro il rapimento dei giornalisti. L’ho incontrato molte volte e molte volte l’ho intervistato e so per certo che i suoi combattenti non possono rapire una donna di 56 anni. Tutti quelli coinvolti nel rapimento possono essere stati influenzati da Osama bin Laden, ma non stanno prendendo ordini direttamente da lui. Posso farti degli esempi recenti. Tre impiegati dell’ONU per le elezioni, sono stati rapiti in Afghanistan l’anno scorso, da un gruppo pro Al Qaeda. Due degli ostaggi erano donne. Immediatamente i leader Talebani hanno condannato il rapimento. So anche che i leader di Al Qaeda hanno mandato un messaggio ai rapitori chiedendo perché avessero rapite delle donne. Gli ostaggi sono stati rilasciati pochi giorni dopo vicino a Kabul. Durante la guerra in Afghanistan, la giornalista inglese Radley era stata arrestata (ottobre 2001) perché era entrata in Afghanistan senza il visto, ma fu rilasciata su richiesta di Al Qaeda. Hanno molto rispetto per le donne gli uomini di Al Qaeda. Anche io sono stato arrestato dai Talebani a Kabul, nel novembre del 2001. Ho affrontato interrogatori per un giorno intero. Alla fine sono stato rilasciato e ho avuto le scuse da parte del ministro degli interni talebano che mi disse chiaramente che Radley era stata arrestata perché gli americani stavano usando molte donne giornaliste e mendicanti come spie. Mi indicò una giornalista della Associated Press Kathey Gannan come spia al servizio degli americani. Era la corrispondente della AP per l’Afghanistan. Ti ho detto tutto questo per spiegarti che Al Qaeda non è direttamente coinvolta nel rapimento di Giuliana Sgrena. Se alcuni simpatizzanti di Al Qaeda sono coinvolti, devono capire che hanno fatto un errore e rilasciarla immediatamente”.

E’ possibile che le forze di occupazione in Iraq siano dietro il rapimento dei giornalisti scomodi?

“Non posso negare questa possibilità a priori, che le forze di occupazione siano dietro il rapimento di Giuliana. Lei stava indagando proprio sulle atrocità commesse dalle forze di occupazione, può darsi che lei abbia scoperto delle prove molto importanti delle atrocità perpetrate. Un altro scandalo come quello di Abu Ghraib sta per uscire fuori e forse questo è il perché è stata rapita. Ci sono molti falsi siti pro Al Qaeda che operano per creare confusione”.

Ma possono anche essere semplici criminali rapitori che hanno fatto tutto questo solo per un riscatto?

“Ti racconto questa storia: ho incontrato alcuni criminali comuni nell’area Al Mansoor di Baghdad che mi hanno offerto molti soldi per far cadere in trappola un giornalista occidentale. Avrebbero richiesto un riscatto ed io avrei avuto la mia parte. Sono scomparso il giorno dopo dall’ hotel Palestine per questa offerta.”

Dietro a questo rapimento ci può essere il suo interesse per quanto è accaduto nei combattimenti a Falluja?

“Sono sicuro e so anche con sicurezza che lei stava dietro a una storia molto importante. E riguardava le forze di occupazione non i ribelli. Il suo rapimento è una sfida lanciata contro Al Zarqawi, se lui è veramente un seguace di Osama bin Laden, allora deve fare qualcosa per il rilascio di Giuliana, perché Osama non ha mai avuto come suoi bersagli nella sua vita le donne, e questo rapimento può dare una cattiva impressione su Al Qaeda anche tra gli stessi musulmani”.

Credi che Giuliana Sgrena sia stata rapita per il suo interesse nella resistenza laica anti Saddam che combatte sia contro le forze di occupazione che contro i terroristi, c’è questo tipo di resistenza realmente?

“Sono sicuro che ci sia questa resistenza. Molti musulmani da diverse parti del mondo stanno giungendo nelle aree sunnite dell’Iraq per combattere contro gli americani. Io spero che la vostra giornalista sia rilasciata quanto prima e che possa scrivere anche un libro su questa brutta avventura, così come ha fatto la giornalista inglese Radley, cosi che si possano spiegare i molti misteri intorno a questa vicenda”.

Hai notizie o informazioni dall’Iraq su quale sia una possibilità per arrivare alla sua liberazione?

”Si, sono in contatto con molti giornalisti amici in Iraq, e loro credono che i leader Musulmani e i giornalisti devono insistere sempre di più per il rilascio di Giuliana, fare continue dichiarazioni”.

Rimanendo sul concreto che cosa credi si possa fare per poter liberare le due giornaliste, sia Giuliana che Flaurence Aubenas?

“Cercate di pubblicare appelli dei giornalisti musulmani sulla stampa irachena. Inoltre bisogna contattare i capi religiosi come l’Immam Abu Hanifa della Moschea di Baghdad e lo sceicco Abdul Qadir Gillani sempre della moschea di Baghdad. I loro appelli avranno sicuramente effetto se Giuliana è nella mani dei ribelli sunniti”.

Credi che Osama Bin Laden possa dare ordini di rapire o rilasciare giornalisti?

“Ho già risposto a questa domanda. Osama bin Ladin non può ordinare di uccidere o rapire dei giornalisti. Anche il giornalista americano Daniel Pearl non è stato ucciso per ordine di Osama in Pakistan. E’ stato ucciso da estremisti anti americani del luogo, e quella uccisione ha gettato terribili ombre sui musulmani. Mi auguro che gli iracheni non commettano lo stesso errore”.

According to you, why Giuliana Sgrena, a veteran Middle East correspondent for the Italian communist daily Il Manifesto, has been kidnapped?

”Giuliana Sgrena was kidnapped due to the presence of Italian troops in Iraq. She is paying the price for the Italian government policies. I think that kidnappers are Sunni insurgents then they are convinced that she is not a spy and she is against the war. Italian government have done nothing serious for the release of Giuliana. She was kidnapped because she was working differently from the other western journalists. The correspondents of big American and British newspapers are doing “hotel journalism” in Iraq while this brave Italian journalist was following stories in the streets on her legs and her unusual way of reporting was the main cause of her kidnapping. There is no doubt that many American and British spies are using press cards in Baghdad. This policy is a threat for all the journalists”.

Do you think the hand that kidnapped Giuliana Sgrena is the same that kidnapped the reporter of Liberation, Flaurence Aubenas?

”I can’t say that Giuliana is kidnapped by the same group which kidnapped the French journalist but I can say through my experience that most of the Iraqis hate all those countries which are involved in the war. I faced the same attitude from Iraqis in 2003 after the invasion. I was a Muslim but they were not happy with me because i was from Pakistan and my country is a partner of US in war against terror. When I visited Iraq again in 2004,attitude was different, Iraqis were thankful that Pakistan refused to send its troops to Iraq. There are different groups in Sunni areas but their objective is same, they want Americans go back. I think if Americans invade Italy today, what will you do? I am sure that Italians will do the same thing to the Americans and their allies which Iraqis are doing”.

Behind this strategy of kidnapping, do you think there could be the hand of Al Qaida?

”This is a very important question. First of all you must understand that Al Qaeda is no more an organization, it has become an ideology. Many groups in Iraq are using the name of Al Qaeda as franchise, I can say with full responsibility that Osama bin Ladin is against the kidnapping of journalists. I have met him, interviewed him many times and i know that his fighters cannot kidnap a 56 year old woman. All those who are involved in kidnapping may have been influenced from Osama bin Ladin but they are not taking orders directly from him. I can give you a recent example. Three election workers were kidnapped in Afghanistan last year by a pro Al Qaeda group. Two of the hostages were woman. Taliban leaders immediately condemned the kidnapping. I know that leaders of Al Qaeda also sent messages to the kidnappers that why they have kidnapped women? Three hostages were released after few days near Kabul. During the war in Afghanistan, a British lady journalist Radley was arrested by Taliban (October 2001) because she entered in Afghanistan without visa but she was released on the request of Al Qaeda. They have lot of respect for women. I was also arrested by Taliban in Kabul on November 8,2001,i faced investigations for the full day. Finally i was released and Taliban Interior Minister said sorry to me but he made it clear Radley was arrested because Americans are using lot of women journalists and beggars as spies. He named one American journalist of AP Kathey Gannan as the spy. She was the AP correspondent for Afghanistan. I have given these details just explain that Al Qaeda is not directly involved in the kidnapping of Giuliana, if some sympathisers of Al Qaeda are involved then they must realise their mistake and release her immediately”.

Is it possible that the same Occupying Powers kidnap the most troublesome reporters?

”I cannot rule out the possibility that may be occupying forces are involved in the kidnapping. Giuliana was investigating about the atrocities of occupying forces, may be she got some very important evidence against the occupying forces, another scandal like Abu Gharib was about to break and that’s why she was kidnapped. There are many fake pro Al Qaeda websites operating just to create confusions”.

Or could there be any sense in saying that they are gangs of criminals looking for ransoms, the real perpetrators of these crimes?

”I met some criminals in Al Mansoor area of Baghdad who offered me lot of money. They proposed that i must trap one western journalist for them, they will take the ransom and then i will get may share. I just disappeared from Palestine hotel after that offer”.

Have you got any news from Iraq that could help us understand and explain these kidnappings?

”Yes i am in touch with many journalist friends and also some friends in Iraq, they think that Muslim scholars and journalist must appeal again and again for the release of Giuliana”.

Behind the kidnapping of Giuliana Sgrena could it be her interest in Falluja and the gathering of evidences and information?

”I am sure and i know that she was after a big story. That story was against occupying forces, not against the militants, Her kidnapping is a challenge to Al Zarqawi,if he is real follower of Osama bin Ladin then he must do something for the release of Giuliana because Osama never targeted any women in his whole life but this kidnapping may give a very bad name to Al Qaeda even among the Muslims”.

Is it possible that Giuliana Sgrena has been kidnapped because of her interest in studying a sort of laically resistance anti-Saddam that fights, at the same time, against terrorism and Occupying Powers? According to your experience in Iraq, does this unknown kind of resistance actually exist?

”I am sure that resistance is there. Lot of Muslims from different parts of the world are gathering in the Sunni areas of Iraq to fight against the Americans. I hope that Giuliana will be released and she will right a book about her kidnapping like British journalist Radley wrote after her release from Afghanistan”.

Getting down to the facts, what do you think could be done to free Giuliana
Sgrena e Flaurence Aubenas?

”Please manage to publish appeals from the Muslim journalists in Iraqi press. Also contact the chief cleric of Immam Abu Hanifa Mosque in Baghdad and Cheif cleric of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gillani Mosque in Baghdad. Their appeals will definitely work if Giuliana is with the Sunni insurgents”.

Do you think Osama Bin Laden could give orders to kidnap or release reporters?

”I have already answered that Osama bin Ladin cannot order the killing or kidnapping of reporters. Even the American journalist Denial Pearl was not killed on his orders in Pakistan. He was killed by some local anti American extremists and that killing gave very bad name to the Muslims, I hope that Iraqis will not repeat that mistake again”.
